Position of the Course

- students are able to situate orthopedagogical theories about specific target groups
- students are able to link their position as future clinicians in multidisciplinary teams to their specific expertise
- students are able to situate the importance of communication within the "new paradigm" (inclusion paradigm) of the Ghent orthopedagogic school
- students develop the sensitivity to cooperate with persons with a handicap and their relatives

Contents

By means of a number of case studies students will offered the basic knowledge (especially focused on communication) relating to the life of persons with a handicap, namely mentally retarded children and adults, children and youngsters with an auditory handicap / deafness, and children and youngsters with physical disabilities. These 3 groups will serve as examples to elaborate fundamental theoretical views and research about communication from an orthopedagogic perspective.
