Position of the Course

The purpose of the course is to provide insight in the pharmacology of neurotropic and psychotropic agents, therapeutic non-pharmacological techniques, such as resective and disconnective surgery, neurostimulation and neuromodulation, and immunological therapies. Furthermore, students should be familiar with the principles of (experimental) neuropsychology and ethology and be able to put the principles in a morphological and physiological context. Furthermore and introduction to experimental animal models and research techniques is provided.

Contents

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics applied to neurotropic and psychotropic drugs. Specific issues in neurtransmission of the nervous system. Anxiolytic, hypnotic, sedative, neuroleptic, antidepressant and central analeptic drugs. Resective and disconnective brain surgery. Neuromodulation. Immunotherapy. Assessment of cognitive and mental function (long latency evoked potentials, functional magnetic resonace imaging, transcranial magnetic stimulation)

Starting Competences

Having successfully completed the courses General physiology, Physiology of the organ systems, Embryology and organogenesis, Functional anatomy, Cell biology and Human pathogenesis from the bachelor program biomedical sciences, or having acquired the relevant ending objectives by other means.

Final Competences

Knowledge of and ability to apply pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles to neurotropic and psychotropic drugs, to neurotransmission of the nervous system. Knowlegde of the mechamism of action and application and indication of anxiolytic, hypnotic, sedative, neuroleptic, antidepressant and central analeptic drugs. Knowledge of the principles, techniques and indications of resective and disconnective brain surgery, neuromodulation, immunotherapy. Understanding of assessment techniques of cognitive and mental function (long latency evoked potentials, functional magnetic resonace imaging, transcranial magnetic stimulation). Knowledge of selected experimental animal models.
