Position of the Course

The student acquires knowledge and insight in the most important aspects of medical laboratory diagnosis such as the methodology currently used, the legal aspects and the critical interpretation of laboratory data.

Contents

The sample, biological variation, pre-analytical phase, pre-analytical variables, pre-analytical errors, sampling, conservation.The clinical laboratory: structure, organistaion, financing; legal requirements regarding laboratories, the personnel, diagnostics. Short overview of current laboratory tests. Government control on laboratories and IVD; quality control: internal, external quality control.Analytical aspects: standardisation; analytical errors (aspecificity, cross reactivity, heterophile antibodies.Diagnostic performance: determination of reference ranges; Bayes theorem-predictive value of tests-ROC analysis; decision making; screening vs aimed request.

Starting Competences

Having successfully completed the courses General chemistry, Organic chemistry, General biochemistry, Biochemistry II, General Physiology, Physiology of the organ systems and Human pathogenesis from the bachelor program biomedical sciences, or having acquired the relevant ending objectives by other means.

  • Understanding the organisation of a clinical laboratory
